February 12 Car

A change of map to make use of some roads not used for a while was the idea and Map 100 would do just fine, in fact a lot of 94/100 crosses over enabling start/ finish venues to be our back yard!

Over running refurbishment at the start venue saw us signing on etc from the pub car park but at least the weather was kind. The planned course opening driver was called to an urgent delivery of some marine components in Spain, I was just about to take this job when Alan and Phil turned up, Alan’s normal navigator was under the weather so offered his services, an exchange of code boards/map and they were off.

With everyone signed on and paid up Stretchy made an executive decision an sorted the running order, Rod turned up not having realised that the start venue existed, he had been searching in other pub car parks in the village, details of TC3 were handed to him and off he went. Meanwhile I wasn’t sure Gordon and Paul at TC2 had a ‘control’ board with them so leaving Stretchy and Ian setting crews off I took a short cut toTC2 where I met Alan and Phil having difficulty changing a puncture with a wheel that was reluctant to part company with the car, a size 10 eventually doing the job. Back to the start where mucho paper shuffling taking place had the official side of the event 90% sorted. Leaving the start crew to swap roles to course closer I went to set up MTC4 in a particularly windy spot, outside the Lion at Blakey.

I knew things were not perfect when Andy and Paul arrived a couple of minuets before the opening car their steed looking no worse for wear than when it set off (though that’s not saying a lot!) Alan and Phil had put out 13 of the 14 boards due to puncture problem and 1 of these was discounted as it was in the wrong place (as those crews that got it pointed out!) Crews came in rapid succession for the next 15mins or so then as the rush ebbed away I had the opportunity to work out penalties from the time cards while waiting for course closer to arrive.

Retiring to the warmth of the pub most people seemed to have enjoyed the event, even the Lowna white didn’t receive howls of protestation I feared it might. The straightforward navigation and a fairly tightly timed route with 45mins lateness had got us a result and the 8 competing crews a finish.

My thanks go to all the crews for taking part and making the organising worthwhile and especially the marshals, Rod, Gordon and Paul for manning the controls Stretchy and Ian for particularly assisting at the start and doing closing and Alan and Phil without who I’d have been rushing about even more!
